Israeli government and military leaders are continuing to closely monitor the fighting that has been raging in neighboring Syria since March 2011. This comes as several media outlets in the region and around the world are reporting an increasingly active role being played in the internal conflict by the Shiite Lebanese Hizbullah militia, which strongly backs the embattled Assad regime ruling the Arab country.
Hizbullah Fighting in Syria
According to a recent report in the Washington Post newspaper, Hizbullah militiamen are now fighting in most of the major battles with government forces, trying to thwart a Sunni Muslim led revolt against the regime. Hizbullah receives financial support from both the Assad regime and Iran, which also supplies most of the militia’s rockets and other weapons.
Hizbullah-linked politicians now hold twenty-one of Lebanon’s 30 cabinet posts, meaning the group effectively controls the country. Lebanese press reports confirm the Washington Post account saying that dozens of Hizbullah fighters have been killed in the Syrian conflict, with families ordered to conduct quiet funerals for the dead, well out of the public eye.
Iranian Revolutionary Guards are also known to be fighting in Syria.
