The abortion industry is in the dog house these days. An abortion clinic owner is going to jail for performing abortions without a medical license, and an ongoing investigation demonstrates Planned Parenthood's willingness to hide child rape and urge teens to get abortions without their parents' knowledge.
Performing Abortions Without A License
Nine women came forward to tell stories after having received botched abortions under the hands of Bertha Bugarin, an abortion clinic owner who performed abortions without a medical license. On December 4, Bugarin pleaded guilty in San Diego Superior Court to nine felony counts of practicing medicine without a license. She also pleaded guilty to seven charges in Los Angeles County three days earlier and faces two separate sentencing dates in January and February 2009.
Several of Bugarin's patients were given incomplete abortions and had to have them redone, and one patient had to be hospitalized twice after complications and gave birth to a live child that died three hours later.
Bugarin was not the only person operating illegally in her clinics. A number of the abortionists who worked for her lost their licenses and others were charged with medical negligence or insurance fraud. One of her abortion doctors, Laurence Reich, continued to work for Bugarin after losing his license for sexually molesting patients.
Bugarin openly targeted the Hispanic community in southern California, running ads on Hispanic television and offering abortions for $500. Operation Rescue has been working to expose Bugarin since 1999, and an investigation by the Chula Vista police and the LA County Sheriff's Dept uncovered her clinics' dangerous and illegal practices. All 11 clinics that Bugarin once owned have been shut down, and only one has reopened under different ownership.
"This criminal preyed on women in the Hispanic community and has now been held accountable," San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said. "By passing herself off as a doctor, she put these women's lives in serious danger."
Protecting Sexual Predators
Planned Parenthood has been criticized before about failing to protect children impregnated by adult men. The pro-abortion organization still has not cleaned up its act. Live Action Film's "Mona Lisa Project," has begun documenting instances in which Indiana abortion clinic counselors have been willing to cover up sex between 13-year-old girls and full grown men. Under Indiana law, health care providers must report to Child Protective Services(CPS) when they learn of sexual activity between an adult and a girl under age 14.
Lila Rose, a student journalist, went undercover as a 13-year-old girl and entered abortion clinics in Indianapolis and Bloomington, IN and told the staffers that she was pregnant by an older man. The staff in both clinics avoided contacting CPS and demonstrated willingness to protect a girl's relationship with a 31-year-old sexual predator.
The hidden video camera shows the Indianapolis staffer saying, "We don't really care about who, what, the age of the boyfriend." A counselor also told Rose, "I don't care how old he is." The counselor told Rose that surrounding states don't have parental consent laws, basically encouraging Rose (whom she believed to be merely 13-years-old) to travel to another state to get an abortion without her mother's knowledge.
Rose got a similar response in a Bloomington Planned Parenthood clinic. The nurse told Rose, "I don't want to know how old he is" and told Rose to go get her abortion at a Planned Parenthood in Illinois and lie about the age of her boyfriend.
Rose told Bill O'Reilly: "This is widespread and has been going on for years, the cover-up of the sexual abuse of young girls. Young girls go into these Planned Parenthoods… looking for help and they're given a bag of condoms, they're given an abortion and sent right back into the arms of the abuser… I've seen it myself personally in dozens of clinics across the country… This is a national problem, and this organization receives… over $300 million a year in government money."
While the staff of these clinics did not actually commit any crime because Rose was neither pregnant nor 13-years-old in reality, Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter says his office will investigate the Bloomington Planned Parenthood because of its staff's willingness to hide a potential case of statutory rape. When Planned Parenthood was investigated in 2005 for hiding statutory rape, the organization refused to hand over records on children under age 14, and won a lawsuit to keep those records hidden.
"It is not enough to allow Planned Parenthood to police itself. That's called letting the fox guard the henhouse," said Mike Fichter, the head of Indiana Right to Life. "We need a full blown investigation to find out exactly what is going on when a girl under fourteen indicates sexual activity to Planned Parenthood."
