Figures published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) this week ranked Israel as the second most educated nation on earth, but also noted its rapidly increasing population numbers.

Students at Hebrew University of Jerusalem at Mount Scopus. The 2011 issue of "Education at a Glance: OECD Indicators" revealed that 45 percent of Israelis possess post-secondary degrees. Only Canada ranked higher with 50 percent of its population earning college or university degrees.

What interested researchers was that despite Israel's high level of education, its GDP per capita ranked only 12 out of 34 OECD member states, meaning most Israelis, who earn an average of $27,690 a year, don't have much spending power.

The report also noted that the rate at which Israelis are earning post-secondary degrees is decreasing rapidly. Though that may have something to do with the fact that Israel's population is growing far faster than any other OECD member state. From 2000 to 2009, Israel's population rose by a whopping 19 percent.
