President Obama a Devout Christian?

The Miami Herald reports that "Pastors who pray with Obama say he's a devout Christian."

What?

In feeble attempts to defend President Obama's support for the building of an Islamic mosque near Ground Zero, his team is now pulling out the "He is a devout Christian" card. The article quotes two pastors in particular:

"He is a Christian by choice, a devout Christian," said Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell of Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston.

"Those of us who've spent time with him and have had a part of forming his spiritual life can testify with certainty of his commitment to Christ," stated Pastor Joel Hunter of Northland Church near Orlando, Fla.

The "devout" claim by Obama spiritual advisers Pastor Joel Hunter and Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell are in response to the rising numbers of Americans who believe what they have seen over the last three years. Caldwell is frustrated that people don't take Obama's faith at face value.

Let's define terms. According to my favorite dictionary, Webster's 1828 version:

DEVOUT - Yielding a solemn and reverential attention to God in religious exercises, particularly in prayer … Sincere; solemn; earnest …

CHRISTIAN - A believer in the religion of Christ; A professor of his belief in the religion of Christ; A real disciple of Christ; one who believes in the truth of the Christian religion, and studies to follow the example, and obey the precepts, of Christ; a believer in Christ who is characterized by real piety.

The Pew Research poll asking the question "What is Obama's religion?" shows a drop from 51 percent to 34 percent of those who think he is Christian, an increase from 11 percent to 18 percent who think he is Muslim and and increase in those who don't know from 32 percent to 43 percent.

With all due respect, it is very simple. The American people are indeed very tolerant; however, one thing that is consistently intolerable to us is raw hypocrisy. President Obama, what you do and who you are speak so loudly, we cannot hear what you say.

Neither I, you nor anyone is in complete position to be the judge of whether Obama has received Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord, the starting point for the identity of "Christian." That is the business of God our Father Who knows the difference between Christians In Name Only and "devout Christians."

We are, however, commanded to be fruit inspectors, with our directions as follows:

Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits. – John 7:15-20, NASB

If Obama's politics reflect his faith, his fruit is rotten by the very standards of the faith he professes.

Does a "devout" or "committed" Christian reflect the following values?

The most radically pro-abortion record of any U.S. senator or president in our history.
The most radical pro-sexual deviancy record of any president in his policy and appointments.
Intimate knowledge of and participation in Islamic worship practices.
Lies and deception used as tools to further his agenda.
Embracement of Marxist economic and political practices.

No. Furthermore, pastors like Hunter and Caldwell who serve as spiritual lapdogs to Obama are even more culpable for giving him cover. They are much like the clergy of Hitlerian Germany and the "Positive Christianity" that represented complete acquiescence to and control by the Nazi state.

It is evident that Barack Hussein Obama is neither a practicing Christian nor practicing Muslim, but an opportunistic politician whose beliefs are shrouded within his political philosophy. He is a religious chameleon – not the first, certainly – whose family, heritage, actions and philosophy are much more pro-Islam than pro-Christianity, however.

Building a mosque representing the religion responsible for the slaughter of thousands of innocent people essentially on that site is an intentional act of aggression by Islam and an incredible abuse of the religious freedom they enjoy here because of Christianity.

However, do not fret, because we should not be dependent on a chameleon politician for our national blessing, but the Author of our freedom. As Pastor Erwin Lutzer of Moody Church in Chicago writes in "When a Nation Forgets God":

We must be confident that Christ will set the record straight. Those who are faithful to Him and His cross will be rewarded with "joy unspeakable and full of glory." All rival crosses will be exposed and judged, and every knee shall bow and "every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Obama a Christian? I doubt it. Devout? Not by any definition.
