Choosing a God-Honoring Lifestyle

Randy AlcornBy Randy Alcorn

Regarding choosing a financial lifestyle that is honoring to God, I received a blog comment from a reader, asking:

Do you believe that everyone should live modestly? (Would that be $30,000 per year, or $50,000, or $100,000, or...?)

How do you measure this? Should everyone have the same amount, or are some called to wealth and others not?
When it comes to our attitude toward wealth, Jesus gave commands. When it comes to our specific possessions and lifestyle, he gave us principles. Jesus did not hand us a precise checklist of what we can and cannot own, and how we can or cannot spend money. Jesus did not say just one thing about money and possessions. He said many things. They were not random clashing noises, but carefully composed melody and harmony to which we must listen as we develop our lifestyles.

On the one hand Christ said,
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth" (Matt. 6:19).
On the other hand Paul gave these instructions to a pastor:
"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life" (1 Tim. 6:17-19).
Paul did not say,
"Command those who are rich to stop being rich."
The implication is that there is a legitimate diversity in the amount of money and possessions owned by Christians. Of course, there is no room for opulence and waste. There is no room for making wealth a source of security, nor for a lack of generosity or hospitality.

Paul left a door open for a Christian to be "rich in this present world" — but only if he carefully follows the accompanying guidelines related to his attitude toward and his use of that wealth. The rich are not told they must take a vow of poverty. But they are told, essentially, to take a vow of generosity. They are to be rich in good deeds, quick to share, quick to part with their assets for kingdom causes — and in doing so they will lay up treasures in heaven.

But who are these "rich," and how rich are they? The answer is that almost everyone who reads this will be rich, both by first-century standards and by global standards today. Statistically, if you have sufficient food, decent clothes, live in a house that keeps the weather out, and own a reasonably reliable means of transportation, you are among the top 15% of the world's wealthy.

If you have any money saved, a hobby that requires some equipment or supplies (fishing, hunting, skiing, astronomy, coin collecting, painting), a variety of clothes in your closet, two cars (in any condition), and live in your own home, you are in the top 5% of the world's wealthy.

Hence, when we speak of the rich we are not talking about "them" but "us." Those we think of as rich today are really the super-rich, the mega-wealthy. But it is we, the rich, to whom Paul is speaking. The allowance of "rich Christians" by 1 Timothy 6:17 immediately follows a sobering warning of what awaits those who desire to get rich (1 Timothy 6:11). If we are rich, and we are, we need not conclude we are necessarily living in sin. But we must carefully adhere to Paul's instructions of what our attitudes and actions are to be.

Nevertheless, the door remains open to legitimate differences in the amount of wealth we own. When Peter pressed Jesus concerning the Lord's plans for John, Christ responded,
"What is that to you? You follow me" (John 21:22).
His emphasis was on the word "you." Each of us has a call of God. We should not be preoccupied with God's dealing with others, nor should we make unhealthy comparisons with our own situation. There are some things that no Christian should do, such as hoard, live in opulence, or fail to give generously. But there are other things some Christians can rightly do that others cannot or choose not to, such as own land, a home, a car, a business, or go on a certain vacation.

Just because they have different lifestyles, one kind of disciple is no more spiritual than the other. Mary of Bethany, arguably the most devoted of all Christ’s disciples, lived in a large house with considerable possessions, which she and her family regularly made available to the twelve. Judas Iscariot, on the other hand, “left all” to follow Christ.

How much money and possessions can we safely keep? Enough to care for our basic needs and some basic wants, but not so much that we are distracted from our basic purpose, or that large amounts of money are kept from higher kingdom causes. Not so much that we become proud and independent of the Lord (Deut. 8:13-14), or are distracted from our purpose, or insulated from our sense of need to depend on God to provide (Matt. 6:26-29).

Those who want to get rich set themselves up for spiritual disaster. Those who happen to be rich, simply as a result of circumstances, hard work, or wisdom, have done nothing wrong. They need not feel guilty unless they do not make their riches generously available to the work of God, or their lifestyles are self-centered and excessive.

Jesus Is the Punch Line … Again

Jonathan FalwellBy Jonathan Falwell

A friend of mine frequently gathers information on the Internet regarding attacks on Jesus Christ in the modern culture. It is really quite amazing what is out there: from Jesus on the Cross dress-up dolls to "Jesus Was Queer" posters to videos such as "Rock Me, Sexy Jesus." (There is also quite a bit that I couldn't even begin to describe in this column.)

In these instances we see that it has become fashionable in our so-called culture of diversity to assail Jesus and those who follow Him.

The most recent example came this week on the HBO broadcast of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" in which the character of Larry (apparently a semi-fictional character played by "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David) desecrates a painting of Jesus, thereby triggering an assumption by two women that the painting is miraculously crying.

In a statement to FoxNews.com, HBO said of the episode,

"Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious."
Maybe there's no maliciousness in the presentation, but can't those who run the networks see that it is Christ and Christianity that are so often the target of such jokes? In the spirit of diversity that the left frequently touts, I wonder if HBO would try broadcasting a similar story line with a character desecrating a portrait of Muhammad or Martin Luther King or Mother Teresa. I think we know the answer.

We saw a few years ago on Comedy Central's "South Park" that the network permitted a scatological-themed episode to include a depiction of Jesus, but not Muhammad. The message: Jesus is fair game for ridicule, but Muhammad is not.

I noted in an earlier column that these media strikes against Christianity go hand-in-hand with the contemporary effort to cleanse the public square of Christian imagery. I believe our nation is at a genuine cultural crossroads, and our side is not winning.

Some are calling for an apology from "Curb Your Enthusiasm" producers, but instead I am calling attention to this incident in order to further my assertion that it is time for Christians everywhere to realize what is happening in our nation. It is time that we begin to take a stand in our churches, in our homes and in the public square.

This Christ-as-punch-line strategy should inflame within us a zeal to work together as His followers to call America back to God. Of course, that means that the effort against us will likely swell even more. However, we're in good company, because Jesus tells us that the world hated Him before it hated us (John 15:19).

My friends, I would greatly prefer being hated by the world for loving the Jesus of the Bible than being loved by the world for compromising His words. We might as well get used to the fact that when we stand with Him, we will be detested and the brunt of jokes. Nevertheless, let us work hand in hand as never before to proclaim the love and grace of Jesus Christ to our nation that constantly condemns Him and treats Him as a punch line.

Between Samhain and Martin Luther

Chuck MisslerBy Chuck Missler

October is a beautiful time of year. Yet Christians, and especially those with children, often struggle to deal with this season. While most understand that stock Halloween celebrations are rooted in the occult, many don't know the broader history behind this peculiar autumn festival. Still, October has not been wholly given over to the dark side. There are some historical bright spots for the Church in October, and it's good to turn our attention to the many ministry opportunities available to us even while avoiding those "games" associated with Halloween that can be entries for the occult.

Background

In ancient Britain and Ireland, the Celtic festival of Samhain ("Sah-win") was observed on October 31, the end of summer. November 1 was the new year for both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon calendars and was one of the most important and yet sinister calendar festivals of the Celtic Year. Settling in northern France and the British Isles, the Celtic people engaged in occultic arts and worshiped nature, giving it supernatural, animistic qualities. (Much like some federal institutions are attempting to enforce today.)

The ancient Druids were the learned priestly class of the Celtic religion. Many of their beliefs and practices were similar to those of Hinduism, such as reincarnation and the transmigration of the soul, which teaches that people may be reborn as animals. The Druids believed that on October 31, the night before their New Year and the last day of the old year, Samhain, the Lord of Death, gathered the souls of the evil dead who had been condemned to enter the bodies of animals.

The Druids also believed that the punishment of the evil dead would be lightened by sacrifices, prayers and gifts to the Lord of Death. (This begins to reveal the strange link between this holiday and the non-Biblical concept of purgatory.)

The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on this day, and the autumnal festival acquired a sinister significance, with ghosts, witches, hobgoblins, black cats, fairies, and demons of all kinds said to be roaming about. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature.

On the other hand, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther drove a stake into the heart of many of the prevailing non-Biblical concepts by nailing his famous 95 theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany. With that, he started the movement known today as the Reformation - the single most important event in modern history. Appropriately, he did this on Halloween.

Modern Halloween Traditions

Halloween is, for many, a "crossover" involvement in which innocent games can lead to serious entanglement with real witches, neo-pagans, New Agers, and other occultists. A common pastime is the use of a Ouija board to attempt to contact ghosts or spirits that are believed to be roaming about. This can lead to serious consequences including demon possession. (The case studies underlying William Blatty's The Exorcist indicate that the trouble all began with a child playing with a Ouija board.) Demons have a vested interest in Halloween because it supports the occult, and it also offers novel and unexpected opportunities to control and influence people.

Forms of the occult can include mediums, channelers, clairvoyants, psychics, spiritists, diviners, mystics, gurus, shamans, psychical researchers, Yogis, psychic and holistic healers, astral travel, astrology, mysticism, Ouija boards, Tarot cards, contact with the dead, UFOs, and thousands of other practices which almost defy cataloging - even Harry Potter books and movies can lead innocent children into the occult. Occultism includes Satanism, astrology, Kabbalah, Gnosticism, theosophy, witchcraft and many forms of serious magic. It includes activities seeking the acquisition of "hidden" things - which are expressly forbidden by God in the Bible.

The Biblical View

Halloween practices can open the door to the occult and can introduce forces into people's lives that they are not equipped to combat. There is genuine power in the occult, but it is demonic power (Mt 24:24; Acts 13:6-11; 16:16-19; 19:18-20; 2 Cor 4:4; Eph 6:7-11, 22).

Any serious study of Biblical demonology will reveal Satan as the power behind false religion, witchcraft, idolatry and the occult (Deut 32:16,17; Ps 106:35-40; Acts 16:16-19; 1 Cor 10:19-21; 2 Thess 2:9, 10; 1 Tim 4:1ff). The Word of God makes it clear that these are all to be shunned as dangerous. There were many superstitions and false concepts in ancient Israel about which the Bible is silent. However, occultism, in any form, was punishable by death! Why? The spiritual power and reality behind idols involves demons (1 Cor 10:20; Ps 106:37). The Bible commands us to shun occult practices. Mediums and spiritists are expressly prohibited (Lev 19:31; Deut 18:10, 11, 14 2 Chr 33:6). Nowhere are such practices acceptable.

Intellect alone is insufficient. "If it were possible, it would deceive the very elect." This is another example of the necessity to truly understand the Armor of God as outlined in Ephesians 6.

Carpe Diem

Yet, this is no time for the Church to turn its back on people or leave them exposed to spiritual danger. This time of year offers tremendous opportunity for ministry. Churches can open their doors to children young and old - not only to have harvest parties or trunk-or-treat outreaches - but especially to let people know what is truly behind the occult. Many people believe these "games" are just harmless fun, and are unaware of the very real dangers they can face by dabbling in the realm of the demonic.

Of course, the point is not to terrify people. The ultimate goal is to point them to the source of true protection, of true salvation, of true hope. Jesus is the victor. He's already won the battle, and he is stronger than anything Satan can throw at us. Even more important, he has triumphed over death for us. He told his disciples long ago, and still tells us today,

"...[R]ejoice not that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven" (Luke 10:20).

Hillary to Demand Halt to Jewish Construction

Aaron KleinBy Aaron Klein

JERUSALEM – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is planning to press Israel over the weekend to cease Jewish construction in the eastern sections of Jerusalem, informed senior diplomatic officials told WND.

Clinton is scheduled to arrive in Jerusalem Sunday in her first official trip to Israel since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office in March.

According to the informed diplomatic officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Obama administration has been disappointed by a lack of progress on Israeli-Palestinian issues brokered by George Mitchell, the White House's envoy to the Mideast.

Clinton is being sent by the White House on a brief visit to Jerusalem to lend her stature to Mideast talks and to deliver a message from the Obama administration that will involve pressing Israel to halt construction in eastern Jerusalem and the strategic West Bank, the diplomatic officials told WND. The officials said Clinton's message emanates from the White House and not specifically from the State Department.

Clinton will stay in Israel for only a few hours. She will meet the day before in Abu Dhabi with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Obama administration has been calling on Israel to halt all Jewish construction in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem.

Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly in September, Obama issued a strongly worded demand for the creation of a "viable, independent Palestinian state with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967."

The term "occupation" routinely is used by the Palestinians as well as some countries hostile to the Jewish state in reference to Israel's presence in the West Bank and Jerusalem. It is unusual for U.S. presidents to use the term, although Jimmy Carter once famously called Israel's presence in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem "illegal."

"Occupation that began in 1967" is a specific reference to the lands Israel retained after the Six Day War of that year, particularly the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount.

The Palestinians never maintained any official capacity in either territory, lands in which Jews have been present for thousands of years. The territories came under Jordanian rule from 1948 until Israel captured them in 1967 after Jordan's King Hussein ignored Israeli pleas for his country to stay out of the Six Day War. Most countries rejected Jordan's initial claim on the area, which it formally renounced in 1988.

The West Bank, meanwhile, is considered landlocked territory not officially recognized as part of any country. Israel calls the land "disputed." The Palestinians and the U.N. Security Council claim the West Bank is "occupied" by Israel, which maintains overall control of most of the area while the Palestinian Authority has jurisdiction in about 40 percent. The U.N. Security Council is traditionally considered hostile to Israel.

The West Bank borders most of Israel's major cities, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Military strategists long have estimated Israel must maintain most of the West Bank to defend its borders from any ground invasion.

Many villages in the West Bank, which Israelis commonly refer to as the "biblical heartland," are mentioned throughout the Torah.

The Book of Genesis says Abraham entered Israel at Shechem (Nablus) and received God's promise of land for his offspring. He later was buried in Hebron.

The nearby town of Beit El, anciently called Bethel, meaning "house of God," is where Scripture says the patriarch Jacob slept on a stone pillow and dreamed of angels ascending and descending a stairway to heaven. In the dream, God spoke directly to Jacob and reaffirmed the promise of territory.

And in Exodus, the holy tabernacle rested in Shiloh, believed to be the first area the ancient Israelites settled after fleeing Egypt.

Climate Change Treaty a Precursor to Global Government?

Chuck BaldwinBy Chuck Baldwin

Writing for World Net Daily, Dr. Jerome Corsi states,

"A former science adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher says the real purpose of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on Dec. 7-18 is to use global warming hype as a pretext to lay the foundation for a one-world government."
Corsi quotes Lord Christopher Monckton as telling a Minnesota Free Market Institute audience at Bethel University in St. Paul,
"Your president will sign it. Most of the Third World countries will sign it, because they think they're going to get money out of it. Most of the left-wing regimes from the European Union will rubber stamp it. Virtually nobody won't sign it."
Corsi quotes Monckton as also saying,
"I read that treaty and what it says is this: that a world government is going to be created. The word 'government' actually appears as the first of three purposes of the new entity." (Thatcher adviser: Copenhagen goal is 1-world government - WND)
Plus, here is a later Fox Business interview with Lord Monckton, in which he further expands his thoughts: http://tinyurl.com/foxbusiness-monckton

Did Lord Monckton exaggerate?

My research of the Climate Change document that Monckton references found the following: it is a 181-page working document that does not mention the words "ballot," "elected official," or "vote" anywhere in it. In my opinion, Lord Monckton did not exaggerate; if anything, he may have understated the situation. The document does indeed appear to be the institutional framework for an unelected supreme communist-style world government.

By signing this document, the United States (and other industrial nations) will forever take responsibility for the ills of backwards and third world countries. And, according to Lord Monckton, this would include China and India, along with the countries of Africa. Notice:
  • Page 6, "PP.15 Further acknowledging that developed countries have a historical responsibility for their disproportionate contribution to the causes and consequences of climate change, reflecting their disproportionate historical use of a shared global carbon space since 1850 as well as their proposed continuing disproportional use of the remaining global carbon space . . . Warming of the climate system, as a consequence of human activity, is unequivocal."
  • Page 38, "28. The adverse effects of climate change and response measures, due to the historical cumulative GHG emissions of developed countries, constitute an additional burden on all developing country Parties (particularly low-lying and other small island countries, countries with low-lying coastal, arid and semi-arid areas or areas liable to floods, drought and desertification, and developing countries with fragile mountainous ecosystems) in reducing poverty, developing strategies to address social vulnerabilities and attaining sustainable development and a threat to achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals."
  • Page 122, "17. (a) Compensate for damage to the LDC's economy and also compensate for lost opportunities, resources, lives, land and dignity . . ."

"(b) Africa, in the context of environmental justice, should be equitably compensated for environmental, social and economic losses . . ."
By signing and being party to this document, we are accepting legal financial responsibility to support non-developed countries FOREVER.
  • Page 27, "(b) Particularly vulnerable populations, groups and communities, [or] All vulnerable groups whose adaptive capacity is low, [or] Groups requiring special protection . . ."
  • Page 43, "41. (a) Assessed contributions of at least 0.7% of annual GDP of developed country Parties."
These funds will go directly to governments and "community organizations."
  • Page 39, "33. [The financial burden] must be at least USD 67 billion (in the range of USD 70-140 billion) per year."
The commitments of the developed countries are "economy wide."
  • Page 58, "7. (a) Mitigation commitments by all developed countries are legally binding economy wide and absolute quantified emission reduction commitments."

"(b) Mitigation actions by developing countries are VOLUNTARY . . ." (Emphasis added.)
The system appears to be loaded to ensure that the world body overseeing this document is granted total control for the enforcement of the requirements of this document throughout all developed countries. Penalties for non-compliance by developed countries are scattered throughout the document.

It appears that what a U.S. President and Congress (Republican or Democratic) could not do through the constitutional legislative process, they are attempting to do through international treaty. Therefore, it is my studied opinion that Lord Monckton's assessment that this upcoming Climate Change Convention in Copenhagen is a "pretext" for the establishment of one world government is "spot-on."

It does seem to be getting clearer and clearer that if the elected civil magistrates in Washington, D.C., do not quickly grow some backbone and develop some sagacity as to the direction these globalists are taking our country, resistance will be forced (in one way or another) upon the States and the People, because it is not possible for the policies and financial burden that are - and will be - levied upon the backs of the American people to be sustained without the surrender of independence, the abridgment of constitutional government, and the loss of liberty.

Stay tuned.

“Free to Live and Love as We See Fit?”

Albert MohlerBy Albert Mohler

As Sen. John McCain recently remarked, "elections have consequences." President Barack Obama signed the "Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act" into law on Thursday, fulfilling a campaign promise and handing the gay rights community one of its most sought-after achievements.

The bill, named for two men killed in vicious attacks, extends the definition of federal hates crimes to include attacks "based on a person's race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or mental or physical disability."

Referring to Matthew Shepherd and James Byrd, the President said:

"It's hard for any of us to imagine the mind-set of someone who would kidnap a young man and beat him to within an inch of his life, tie him to a fence, and leave him for dead. It's hard for any of us to imagine the twisted mentality of those who'd offer a neighbor a ride home, attack him, chain him to the back of a truck, and drag him for miles until he finally died."
Those words are eloquent in exposing the deep evil that resides in far too many human hearts. If anything, the President spoke too cautiously. It is not only "hard" for any morally sane person to imagine the mentality behind these attacks, it is and must be impossible. Such crimes of violence against any human being should and must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But defining these crimes as "hate crimes" shifts the legal issue from the criminally violent act itself to the thoughts and intentions of the criminal. This is a dangerous and unnecessary step, for the very idea of a hate crime requires the government to play the role of psychiatrist and also requires a list of those who deserve special protections. How can government stop the extension of that list? If criminalizing hate is legally justifiable, should not every citizen be granted these same protections?

Even more ominously, the logic of hate crime laws inevitably leads to the idea of laws against what is defined as "hate speech." It is not fair to suggest that this specific legislation includes a hate speech provision. It is fair, however, to sound the alarm that very important rights involving the freedom to speak openly against homosexuality, for example, are now at far greater risk.

There was no surprise in the fact that President Obama signed the bill. The shock came, not in the fact that he signed it, but in what the President said in his comments.
"This is the culmination of a struggle that has lasted more than a decade. Time and again, we faced opposition," said the President. "Time and again, the measure was defeated or delayed. Time and again we've been reminded of the difficulty of building a nation in which we're all free to live and love as we see fit."
Does President Obama actually mean what he said here? Does he really call for a society "in which we're all free to live and love as we see fit?" The hate crimes bill he signed into law covers gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation. The courts will have to sort out all that is covered in those categories.

But the "free to live and love as we see fit" language was set in a context larger than the hate crimes bill. President Obama is an intellectually serious man. He knows that words matter. When he speaks of all citizens being "free to live and love as we see fit" he opens the door far beyond the categories of heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual. Does he mean to include polygamists in this vision? The "polyamorous?" Incest? The catalogue of sexual interests claimed by some as "loves" goes far beyond these.

We are living in an age increasingly marked by what Sigmund Freud called "polymorphous perversity." I do not believe that President Obama meant to include any and all sexual interests and lifestyles under his blanket category of living and loving "as we see fit." But words really do matter, and this President now bears responsibility for signing a dangerous bill into law and then for compounding that act by using language that was self-congratulatory, dishonest, and dangerous.

In another sense, the President's language was revealing. The logic that leads to the celebration of gay, lesbian, and bisexual relationships cannot stop with those sexual categories. In an age that elevates "consent" as the only meaningful moral and legal issue, any effort to refuse similar recognition to any consensual sexual relationship, lifestyle, or practice is doomed to eventual failure. It is all just a matter of time.

Yes, Sen. McCain, elections have consequences. But words have consequences, too, President Obama. Do you really want to live with the consequences of your words spoken on Thursday?

Recognizing J Street for What It Really Is

Jim HutchensBy Jim Hutchens

Harvey Schwartz said: "J Street is an American [Jewish] organization whose purpose is to vociferously criticize Israel and its policies (as well as lobby for the adoption of policies which are contrary to its best interests) before the US government."

Most American-Israelis I have spoken to recognize J Street for what it really is - a radical, far left organization funded and supported by radical forces. A true wolf in sheep's clothing. Indeed, J Street's executive director, Jeremy Ben-Ami just confirmed that truth by declaring at the J Street conference,

"we are here to redefine and expand the very concept of being pro-Israel."
Israel's greatest enemies could not have articulated it any better."

God says:
"A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but in his heart he harbors deceit. Though his speech is charming, do no believe him, for seven abominations fill this heart. His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly." (Proverbs 26:24-26).
The Jerusalem Connection says: Of all people who should support the Biblical basis for Israel, one would expect a consensus among the Jewish people as a whole. Sadly, such is not the case. Liberal Jews continue to demonstrate either their ignorance of God’s covenant promises to Israel or their adamant refusal to accept them. Is it any wonder God has decreed only a remnant to survive.
"As a shepherd saves from the loin’s mouth only two leg bones and a piece of an ear, so will the Israelites be saved." (Amos 3:12).
Meanwhile it is the pro-Israel Christian who will continue to be the most steadfast supporter of Israel and the Jewish people.

UN Aids Jihadis

Robert SpencerBy Robert Spencer

That they have broken up several major jihad plots in recent weeks is a tribute to American intelligence gathering and law enforcement. To them must go the credit for the fact that the U.S. is not this week picking up the pieces after another major terror attack.

Yet just as Islamic terrorists appear to be ramping up their efforts within the United States, at the UN a new report recommends not the strengthening, but the repeal of counterterrorism laws.

In a bizarre report to the UN Human Rights Council, ostensibly on counterterrorism but actually more intent on social engineering, a Finnish law professor who is a special reporter to the UNHRC, Martin Scheinin, examines what he calls the “complex relationship between gender equality and countering terrorism.”

What does working for “gender equality” have to do with resisting Islamic jihad terrorism? Nothing whatsoever, but Scheinin is determined to change that. He calls on UN member states to “abandon the ‘war paradigm’” and instead “enshrine the principles of gender-equality and non-discrimination in the design and implementation of all counterterrorism measures.” He demanded that the American “war on terror” be “actually responsive to the concerns of women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex individuals in local contexts.” Instead, apparently, of actually defending Americans from terrorists.

Scheinin also recommended that laws designed to interdict the financing of terror groups be relaxed. Why? To make sure that “safe and effective channels for funding” were available for “organizations devoted to gender equality.” He advocated the repeal of “restrictive immigration controls” that penalize “transgender persons whose personal appearance and data are subject to change.” What does that have to do with terrorism? Why, some jihadists have escaped detection by donning burqas - and Scheinin wants to make that easier. He says that to “focus attention on male bombers who may be dressing as females to avoid scrutiny” runs the risk of making “transgender persons … susceptible to increased harassment and suspicion.”

It would be laughable that any of this would appear in a United Nations report on counterterrorism - if only it weren’t true. Scheinin’s recommendations obviously stem from the assumption that actual terrorism is a fiction, a construct of governments he considers reactionary (principally, no doubt, the administration of George W. Bush). Unfortunately, one group that doesn’t appear to have gotten the message are the Islamic jihadists themselves.

Before the UNHRC follows Scheinin’s recommendations to discard counterterrorism laws in the name of political correctness, it should consider some recent developments in the United States.

Just last week, for example, a Muslim in Boston, Tarek Mehanna, was arrested for plotting to massacre American civilians in a shopping mall, as well as to murder two “members of the executive branch” that law enforcement officials declined to identify.

In recent weeks there have been other plots as well: two Muslims, including an imam, were arrested for their alleged roles in an elaborate plot involving numerous other Muslims in New York City and Denver, who were evidently planning a major jihad attack at a sports stadium. Another Islamic jihadist, Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, was arrested after placing an inert car bomb at a 60-story office tower in downtown Dallas. Yet another jihadist, an American convert calling himself Talib Islam, was arrested for plotting to blow up the Paul Findley Federal Building in Springfield, Illinois.

It would be difficult to find a comparable period since 9/11 in which so many plots have been uncovered around the same time - and this makes Scheinin’s recommendations all the more grotesque. Is this really time to “abandon the ‘war paradigm’”? This is a time, on the contrary, to refine and expand that “war paradigm,” to take into account all the many ways in which Islamic supremacists are attempting to bring elements of Islamic law into Western societies – including those that have no connection to actual terrorism. But the many recent foiled terror plots indicates that the United Nations, if it treats Scheinin’s report seriously at all, is suffering from a severe disconnection from reality.

That disconnect is nothing new, really, when it comes to the United Nations. But in this case even more than usual, lives are at stake.
