Obama's War on Free Speech

By Joseph Farah

Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are intent on nationalizing media in the U.S. much the same way they nationalized the U.S. auto industry and the nation's banking and financial institutions.

This isn't the so-called "Fairness Doctrine."

It's much worse.

Here's what you can expect in the coming weeks and months:
  • a new appointment to the position of chairman of the Federal Communications Commission who will implement a plan to create "community advisory boards" of community activists to monitor the content of talk-radio programs, threatening stations that carry dissenting content with broadcast license challenges;
  • billions of additional dollars to be invested in so-called "public broadcasting" – those entities already funded and controlled by government;
  • bailouts of failing newspapers perceived as essential propaganda tools for the party.
It's a program worthy of the old Soviet Union – where the old joke noted there was no truth in Pravda and no news in Izvestia.

But this is no joking matter. The First Amendment is at stake.

Sign WND's Petition to Block Congressional Attacks on Freedom of Speech and Press now!

The FCC is currently composed of two Democrat and two Republican commissioners. Obama has nominated a new chairman, Julius Genachowski, which would give Democrats a 3-2 majority once he is confirmed.

But the nominee is not just another Democrat. He's a Democrat with a plan.

Genachowski advocates creating new media ownership rules that promote a diversity of voices on the airwaves. In fact, Genachowski is credited with helping craft the Obama technology agenda, which states: "Encourage diversity in the ownership of broadcast media, promote the development of new media outlets for expression of diverse viewpoints, and clarify the public interest obligations of broadcasters who occupy the nation's spectrum."

Translation? Government control of broadcast media – particularly the kind of talk radio Democrats find so annoying.

The party in power wants to remain in power perpetually. And to do so, like so many other power-hungry parties of the past, it seeks to control the debate and stifle dissent.

Because the party in power looks to National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting System as the models of fairness and balance, look for massive new "investments" in these official voices.

And, lastly, look for the bailout model to be used to keep the party's choice newspapers on life support.

Just last week, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., all but assured employees of the deeply troubled Boston Globe, a newspaper owned by the New York Times, that he will not allow the paper to go out of business despite falling revenues.

All of these may seem like unrelated developments. But they are not. They are part of a sophisticated plan to socialize the media – preserving with taxpayer dollars failing media institutions that support the party in power and using the coercive power of government to crush those media institutions that are critical of the party in power.

The plot was not hatched inside the White House or even in the halls of Congress. It was developed by John Nichols of the Nation magazine and Robert McChesney, a self-described neo-Marxist media theoretician.

The essence of their program – "the need to promote an understanding of the urgency to assert public control over the media."

"Our claim is simply that the media system produces vastly less quality than it would if corporate and commercial pressures were lessened," they wrote in "Our Media, Not Theirs: The Democratic Struggle Against Corporate Media."

Amazingly, they cite the founders' commitment to a free press as their inspiration.

I guess they forgot to absorb the literal meaning of the First Amendment that begins: "Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. …"

That's the origin of the game plan.

You can watch it unfold soon.

Or, you can put your foot down and say boldly, "Not with my money, you don't."

Is Israel an Obstacle to Obama?

By Dr. David Hocking

Israel an Osbtacle to Obama?
by Gil Ronen

(IsraelNN.com) According to a classified intelligence assessment handed to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, U.S. President Barack Obama and his senior advisors wish to “incrementally diminish U.S. strategic cooperation with Israel.”

A report in World Tribune quoted an Israeli source familiar with the intelligence assessment who said that “Obama wants to make friends with our worst enemies and those who we until now called the worst enemies of the United States. “Under this policy,” the source added, “we are more than irrelevant. We have become an obstacle.”

According to the report, which has not been corroborated by news sources other than World Tribune, Israeli sources said the U.S. Administration would reject Israel’s intelligence opinions on Iran and Syria while advancing the Obama plan to reconcile with the two states, although both were listed as state sponsors of terrorism by the U.S. State Department.

The Israeli intelligence document reportedly predicted that Obama would maintain his policy of appeasing Iran and Syria through 2010. It determined that Obama is convinced that appeasing Iran and Syria would make a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan possible.

Pressure on Israel

“Obama will want to show Iran, Syria and radical Muslims that the United States could pressure Israel on a strategic level,” the source said. “The pressure has already begun and will intensify throughout the next year or two.”

At the same time, the intelligence officials estimated that Obama would restrict U.S. arms exports to Israel in an effort to deny it systems that it could use in a raid on Iran or Syria. The intelligence sources said this policy was begun during the last year of the Bush administration and predicted that it would intensify under Obama.

Carter: US and Syria Close to Full Relations

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said on Tuesday that the U.S. and Syria are close to restoring full diplomatic ties. “Syrian President Bashar Assad is very eager to restore full ties with Washington,” Carter told Haaretz. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens this year,” he added, speaking on the phone from Quito, Ecuador, at the start of a four-nation South American trip.

Carter plans to meet Assad in Syria in early June.

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar Assad said Tuesday that Obama would face “a serious crisis in the Middle East” if he does not fix the mistakes made by his predecessor George W. Bush, within a year’s time.

On a visit to Vienna after meeting Austrian leaders and intellectuals, Assad called on the U.S. to rapidly withdraw its troops from Iraq. This, he claimed, would resolve “50 per cent of the problem,” Austrian news agency APA reported.

However, by appeasing Iran and Syria the U.S. is risking alienating Egypt.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak warned Egypt’s rivals in the Middle East Wednesday that he would not tolerate what he called their “tampering with security and stability” in his country, a reference to Iran and the Hizbullah terror militia that it supports.

Mubarak’s comments were his most strongly worded ones since Egypt accused the Hizbullah of plotting attacks in the country. They were also meant to send a strong message to the group’s backers in Iran.

On the Brink of a Global Pandemic

By Joel C. Rosenberg

Jesus said in the last days “nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors.” (Luke 21:10-11)

The head of the World Health Organization says the world now stands on the brink of a global pandemic. She is urging governments and health professionals to act quickly to stop a terrible plague that could cost many lives, given how horrific past pandemics have been. “The 1918-19 pandemic of “Spanish flu” killed around 2.64 million Europeans, according to a French study, which says that despite its name, the pathogen probably originated outside Europe,” reports Agence France Presse.

Excerpts from remarks by Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO director-general:
“Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously, precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world. For the first time in history we can track the evolution of a pandemic in real time. Influenza viruses are notorious for their rapid mutation and unpredictable behaviour. All countries should immediately now activate their pandemic preparedness plans. Countries should remain on high alert for unusual outbreaks of influenza-like illness and severe pneumonia…. Based on assessment of all available information and following several expert consultations, I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5. This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharmaceutical industry and the business community that certain actions now should be undertaken with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace.”

So Far, So Good

By Jack Kinsella

A hundred days into his presidency, Barack Obama’s standing with the public remains high, increasing the odds he can enact his fascist agenda. Most Americans like the new president, even amid some reservations about his policy goals, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.

Among the 19 executive orders and 12 laws that bear his signature, Obama expanded a federally funded, state-run children’s insurance program and enacted pay equity changes, not to mention his $787,000,000,000.00 “stimulus package” borrowed from the next two generations of Americans.

The poll also finds that the president himself is more popular than his policies, a divide that may catch up with him as Congress begins debate over the big issues in earnest.

Or not. Somebody Down There seems to like him.

When Will the Old Testament Saints Be Resurrected?

By Nathan Jones

The question of when will the Old Testament Saints be resurrected was put to the reader in March's poll titled "When Will the OT Saints Be Resurrected?" The 420 respondents cast their vote among a number of categories. The result showed a wide range of opinions as to when they thought this resurrection would occur along God's prophetic timeline.

Multiple Resurrections

Dr. David Reagan in his article "Resurrections and Judgments" explains that the Bible reveals there will be more than one resurrection.

Jesus clearly taught that there would be more than one resurrection. In John 5:29 He refers to a "resurrection of life" and a "resurrection of judgment." The apostle Paul confirmed this concept in his defense before Felix when he stated that he believed the teaching of the prophets "that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked" (Acts 24:15).

Of course, it could be argued that the two resurrections referred to in these scriptures will occur at the same time. Thus, because they will happen simultaneously, there is, in effect, only one resurrection. However, the Scriptures establish the fact that the resurrection of the righteous will occur in stages.

In other words, the Bible does not teach one resurrection or even two resurrections in number. Rather, it teaches that there will be two resurrections in type which will be conducted in stages, resulting in several resurrections — at least four, to be specific — three for the just and one at the end of the Millennial Kingdom for the unjust.

The Resurrection of the Just

That the resurrection of the righteous will occur in stages is clearly taught in 1 Corinthians 15:20-24. In fact, the first stage of the resurrection of the righteous has already happened, for verse 20 says that "Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep."

Verses 22 and 23 go on to explain that all who have died in Christ shall be made alive, "but each in his own order: Christ, the first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at His coming."

The imagery of the harvest that is used in these verses is a key to understanding the first resurrection — the resurrection of the righteous.

The Harvest Imagery

In Bible times the harvest was conducted in three stages. It began with the gathering of the first fruits which were offered as a sacrifice of thanksgiving to God.

It proceeded with the general harvest. But not all was taken in this harvest. Some of the crop was left in the field to be gathered by the poor and the needy. This was called the gleanings (Leviticus 19:9-10).

Using this imagery, the Bible presents the resurrection of Jesus as the "first fruits" of the resurrection of the righteous. The gathering of the Church Age saints, living and dead, at the appearing of the Lord (the Rapture) is thus the general harvest stage of the resurrection of the righteous (John 14:1-3 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

But there is a third and final stage to this resurrection of the righteous. It is the gleanings, and it occurs at the end of the Tribulation when the Lord's Second Coming takes place. At that time two final groups of the righteous will be resurrected: 1) the Tribulation martyrs (Revelation 20:4), and 2) the Old Testament saints (Dan 12:2).

Some people are startled by the thought that the Old Testament saints will not be resurrected until the end of the Tribulation. But keep in mind that the Rapture is a promise to the Church, and the Church only. Also, the book of Daniel makes it clear that the Old Testament saints will be resurrected at the end of the "time of distress" (Daniel 12:1-2).

So the first resurrection, the resurrection of the righteous, occurs in three stages, beginning with Christ, continuing with the Church at the Rapture, and culminating with the Tribulation martyrs and the Old Testament saints at the return of Jesus.

Of Obedience, Occupation and Reward

By Bill Wilson

Many Christian Americans are distraught over the turn of current events. They do not believe that there is any use in opposing the current government because it is too out of control and too powerful. They see their Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms being diminished one by one. They see the overarching dominion of the current administration as against everything Christian-using hard earned tax money to nationalize major financial and manufacturing businesses, to fund abortion in America and abroad, to support sexual immorality - and they throw up their hands and say "we cannot do anything, let us just pray and hide in the shadow of our Lord's protection until He returns."

In the gospel of Luke Chapter 19, Jesus speaks a parable to those who believed that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. The parable was about a nobleman who went into a far away country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then to return. Jesus said in verse 13, "And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, 'Occupy till I come.'" And after he returned, he called the servants together to see how they had managed the money. Some had done well and multiplied the money, others not so well. The servant who disobeyed, hid the money, and did not multiply it for the noblemen was punished and the money was taken away and given to the obedient servants.

Take heart Christian Americans: Jesus said "Occupy till I come." The dictionary says an occupier is one who "takes possession and control, such as a military invasion." It is not a passive charge. In order to occupy in this nation, where the Lord saw fit that the people choose its leaders and government, one must be clear on his mission. And to do that, one must know the Bible. God's word gives us all the tools and the Holy Spirit gives us the spiritual gifts to occupy. To do so, we must understand His word as it is meant, not as it is taught by deceivers who loosely translate the word of God to their advantage. Then we must know the US Constitution, which was based on the word of God. Then we must act.

By using the word of God as our understanding, the Constitution as our legal standing, and by discerning the times and the events of the nation, we must take possession and control. A government that terrorizes its people for photo opportunities; that casually says it expects deaths from pandemic disease, yet is doing virtually nothing to protect its citizens; that uses citizens' money for wicked purposes against both the Bible and the Constitution; is a government that must be brought into alignment with both. And Christian Americans, charged to occupy by their King, Lord and Savior, must engage the fight. Otherwise, When the Lord returns, we will be treated like the servant who was disobedient.

Political Correctness Gone Awry

By Chuck Missler

Sometimes silly, sometimes irritating, sometimes very serious, political correctness is all around us. It can scratch at a single community or it can gouge through an entire nation. Here are some forms of political correctness considered a bit out of whack:

The Starter Gun: Of course we don't want adolescent kids bringing guns to school. Teens have enough temptations to deal with without having a 9mm readily available in their lockers. In Toronto, though, somebody decided it would be a good idea to ban even starter guns at track meets. Apparently, these noisy pistols armed with blanks are considered a bad example to the angst-ridden teens we want to keep gun-free at school. The problem with a starter gun ban isn't just that starter pistols have been used for "Go!" since Babel, and kids have consistently rejected the urge to go postal at track meets. The problem is also that starter pistols are relatively inexpensive. It would cost a lot to replace the pistols with loud horns tied to electronic timers. Is it really that necessary to nix these big cap guns?

Spring Egg Hunts: Earlier this month, an editorial in The Acorn of LA County, California complained about the fact that local children were going to be hunting "spring eggs" instead of "Easter eggs" because of out-of-bounds political correctness. Correctly, the writer defended protecting religious symbols from being generalized to death because it just offends the faithful.
"Consider the revered Hannukah menorah. Because Christians light multiple candles at Christmas, too, how about a new, one-size-fits-all name: 'the holiday candelabra'? No. It's called a menorah and it's a very important part of the Jewish religion. And yes, the little white rabbit is called an Easter bunny and it's indelibly linked to the Christian holiday this Sunday."
The irony is that the term "Easter" is rooted in ancient pagan religions and not in Christianity at all. The Easter bunny has nothing to do with the Christian faith. Yet, those who changed the children's hunt to one of "Spring eggs" certainly did so because the term "Easter" is culturally connected to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. After all, there's always that risk that children might think about God while wolfing down chocolate bunny eggs.

Terrorists No More: While some tendrils of political correctness are just silly or annoying, others can seriously endanger the lives of American citizens. When people who chop the heads off of civilians are called "militants" instead of "terrorists" and are set free to go back to the work of bringing America to its knees before Allah, we all should be deeply concerned. Conservative writer Thomas Sowell writes:
"We have already turned loose dozens of captured terrorists, who have resumed their terrorism. Why? Because they have been given ‘rights' that exist neither in our laws nor under international law."
This is completely misguided. The President's primary concern is the safety of the American people, and letting terrorists go free cannot possibly make America safer. Sowell continues:
"Bending over backward is a very bad position from which to try to defend yourself. Nobody in those days confused bending over backward with ‘the rule of law,' as Barack Obama did recently. Bending over backward is the antithesis of the rule of law. It is depriving the people of the protection of their laws, in order to pander to mushy notions among the elite."
The official "War on Terror" may have ended, but that does not mean that the terrorists have ceased their war against us. Political correctness on our part will not change that, and in fact may entice the enemy to attack us as they perceive us as weak, exposed, and unprotected.

People are polite and gracious in civilized societies. They treat their neighbors with decency and respect. Yet, political correctness is more than simple politeness; it is an irrational attempt to please even the basest or most picky elements of society. In the end, political correctness always offends somebody, and, in some cases, endangers everybody.

The Jewish State of Israel Celebrates its 61st Birthday

By Jimmy DeYoung

Millions of Israelis crowded the streets of the Jewish state to celebrate their 61st birthday on this independence day for a reborn nation of ancient people that have been gathered from over 100 nations of the world which many world leaders refer to as a modern day miracle.

Even with the threat of a radical Moslem leader, the president of Iran, President Ahmadinejad calling for the Jewish state to be wiped off the earth, the Jewish people, more than 5.5 million of them, have a hope for peace and security in a region of the world prone to conflict.

Israeli PM Benyamin Netanyahu addressing the nation told Israelis that this Independence Day marks the fulfillment of the dreams of millions of Jews, they once again have a Jewish state.

Jimmy's Prophetic Prospective on the News

As the Jewish people in Israel celebrate their 61st birthday, they are also making known to the world that Bible prophecy has been and will be fulfilled.

On the Jewish calendar, which is different than the Christian calendar, this is the day that marks the rebirth of the Jewish state 61 years ago. When David Ben Gurion announced to the world in 1948 that Israel was a state among the other nations of the world, he realized the journey had just begun for the Jewish people in the rebuilding of their nation after 2,000 years of being scattered to the four corners of the earth. Ben Gurion said it was a miracle of God and the fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

The ancient Jewish prophets wrote 2,500 years before the fact that God would give His chosen people, the Jewish people, a nation once again and in the land of their forefathers. Ezekiel wrote that God would gather these Jews to Israel, Ezekiel 34. The prophet also said in Ezekiel 36 that the nation would be in the land that He had given their forefathers. The Lord had promised the Jewish patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that the Jewish nation would be forever, Genesis 15, 26 and 35.

The 61st Independence Day of Israel is indeed tangible evidence that Bible prophecy will be fulfilled.

Abbas Rebuffs Idea of 'Jewish State'

By Chris Perver

President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority has said he refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish state during a conference in Ramallah. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu recently requested that the Palestinian leadership recognize the state of Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people, if progress is to be made on the idea of 'two states for two peoples'. But President Abbas refused point-blank to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, instead insisting that Israel withdraw from all territory captured during the Six Day War.
"A Jewish state, what is that supposed to mean?" Abbas asked in a speech in the West Bank's political capital of Ramallah. "You can call yourselves as you like, but I don't accept it and I say so publicly." He said it's not his job to define the state of Israel. "Name yourself, it's not my business," He said. "All I know is that there is the state of Israel, in the borders of 1967, not one centimetre more, not one centimetre less. Anything else, I don't accept."
The Israeli government hopes that by agreeing to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, the issue of Palestinian refugees could be resolved. Arab refugees would return to a Palestinian state instead of Israel proper, thus preserving the character of the Jewish nation.

But Abbas doesn't like that idea because it affords legitimacy to the state of Israel. As President of the Palestinian Authority Abbas is required to recognize Israel's existence, but as chief of the Fatah terrorist organization he refuses to recognize its legitimacy. Instead Abbas hopes that by forcing Israel to accept millions of Palestinian refugees, who were encouraged to flee their homes by Arab nations during the War of Independence and Six Day War, the Jewish character of Israel could be demographically destroyed. And testament to that fact, following the conference, President Abbas was presented with a 'map' of Palestine, with the state of Israel nowhere to be seen.

It's hard to believe that this is the man that the international community is demanding Israel negotiate with. How can you negotiate with someone who refuses to even recognize your right to exist? And they are saying, if only Israel would do this, then there would be peace! Israel's enemies will not be overjoyed to see Israel withdraw from Judea and Samaria. Rather they will interpret it as a sure sign of their cowardice and impending destruction. But the Bible predicted all of this would come to pass. The prophecy of Zechariah states that in the last days, they shall be in siege against Judea and Jerusalem (modern-day West Bank), and that the status of Jerusalem shall become a burdensome issue for the entire world. The Bible predicts that all who trouble themselves with Jerusalem shall be cut in pieces (Zechariah 12:2-3).

As you can see, rather than being closer to peace than ever before as Ehud Olmert claims, the world actually hovers on the brink of a cataclysmic disaster. As world leaders gathered in Annapolis to launch negotiations on the establishment of a Palestinian state, the US economy was beginning to falter. We had no idea how bad things were to get. This present US administration, which is much less favourable to Israel than the previous one, has made the Middle East conflict its top priority. There is no doubt darker days are ahead. God has revealed to us in His Word what will shortly come to pass.
"Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night? The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night", Isaiah 21:12-13.
The dark must come before the dawn. Are you prepared for the night? Those who have trusted in Christ are not in darkness, that that day of judgement should overtake us as a thief (1st Thessalonians 5:4). But those who have not trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation will be caught unawares. Turn away from your sins. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation today (Acts 16:31).
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. (Luke 21:36)

Federal Government Negligent and Culpable In US Swine Flu Deaths

By Bill Wilson

The Federal Government should be held accountable in the court of law for deaths of Americans due to the swine flu. Knowing of the disease before it spread to the United States, the Feds failed to shut down the border with Mexico, stop flights from Mexico and quarantine those who had come down with the flu symptoms. After declaring a state of health emergency, the acting head of the Center for Disease Control Richard Besser said,
"I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection. . . We are dealing with a new strain of influenza, we're dealing with a strain of influenza that appears to be moving through our community."
The government refused to take the necessary steps to protect its citizens.

But in response to reporters' questions on Monday that the border between the US and Mexico should be closed until the swine flu threat passes, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano replied:
"We're already doing passive surveillance at the border. . .You would close the border if you thought you could contain the spread of disease, but the disease already is in a number of states within the United States." Noting that those infected with swine flu may not show symptoms for a few days, Napolitano said border closure is "a very difficult judgment to make."
So let's get this straight, according to the person in charge of protecting the "Homeland", the government is taking a "hands off" approach.

Napolitano believes because the swine flu was already in the United States in very small numbers, that closing the border down and further isolating the swine flu was a bad idea. Her reasoning is that there is no benefit in closing the border because you can't contain the spread of the disease anyway. That's like having a couple of thieves robbing your house and instead of calling the police, you call the county jail and ask if the sheriff can open the jail and send more thieves to your house. Because of this negligence, many believe the government is purposely allowing the swine flu into the US so it can impose mandatory flu vaccinations on the population.

But the purpose and intent of this White House, filled with socialists, those who have refused to pay their taxes, and have consistently made anti-American public statements, appears to be far more than population control - it appears intent on destroying the country - first the economy and then the people. Jesus said in John 10:10,
"The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy."
And in verse 12, He says,
"But he that is a hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own sheep the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep."
In verse 11, Jesus says,
"I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep."
Be not deceived, the Federal Government is not Jesus.

What the Southern Baptists Are Missing

By Nathan Jones

"The nation's largest evangelical denomination reports it gave more to missions work, but lost members and baptized fewer people last year."

That statement made by OneNewsNow.com ("Giving to missions up, membership down among Southern Baptists" by Allie Martin, Apr.28, 2009) sums up the pain the Southern Baptist denomination is experiencing as they put more and more funding and manpower towards reaching out with the Gospel, yet are seeing fewer and fewer accepting salvation.

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in their 2008 Annual Church Profile (ACP), a yearly report looking at the work and ministries of each church within the denomination, contains the worrisome statistics. While total giving to missions reached $1.36 billion in 2008, wonderfully supporting more than 10,500 missionaries who engage nearly 1,200 people groups throughout North America and around the world, baptisms fell for the fourth straight year to 342,198, a drop of 1.1 percent, the fewest number of people since 1987.

Thom S. Rainer is president and CEO of LifeWay, the ministry within the SBC that compiled the Annual Church Profile. While Dr. Rainer praised Southern Baptists as being "among the most generous and mission-minded people in the world" who will "give even when they're hurting so the spiritual and physical needs of others are met," he also noted that "the numbers simply tell us that Southern Baptists are not reaching as many people for Christ as they once did." As Dr. Rainer reports, "It still takes 47 Southern Baptists to baptize one person for Christ."

"Why is that? Why are the Southern Baptists excelling so much in missions giving and implementation, but are seeing ever-declining results?

The answer, I believe, lies in the Profile's Sunday school enrollment statistics: "Sunday school enrollment dropped 123,817, or 1.6 percent, to 7,752,794." And, that these Sunday school statistics are affecting membership statistics: "Total SBC membership fell by 38,482, or 0.2 percent last year, to 16,228,438."

Before I explain why I believe the declining Sunday school statistics reveal the reason, understand that I am currently a member of the Southern Baptist denomination. Throughout my life I've been a member or attendee of many denominations, and as long as they were solid on doctrine and strong in the expository teaching the Word of God, I was there. And, when seeking a seminary that stood on those essential teachings, I became a student of the doctrinally solid Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In a time of growing apostasy in the Church, the Southern Baptists in the past almost fell off the precipice into apostasy until Dr. Albert Mohler, Jr., led the charge back to doctrinal soundness within the denomination. I respect the Southern Baptists and their stand, and so joined up.

Going to Southern Seminary and attending a Southern Baptist church can be two different things, though. While Dr. Mohler is writing important books like He Is Not Silent: Preaching in a Postmodern World that teach the essentiality of expository preaching, the churches' sermons teach very little except the importance of missions and social justice. While the Seminary instills the importance of strong corporate Sunday school study and even provides the full weight of LifeWay teaching resources, the churches starve out the Sunday school classes in favor of small home groups led by unqualified "facilitators" who are given materials that only teach... missions.

Missions is the key passion of many Southern Baptist churches, and as a former Missions minor myself, I applaud the denomination for its strong desire to reach people for Christ. But, missions without educating those who are going out into the field in what they believe lets loose an army of short-term missionaries that have no idea of what they believe or even how to share it. The "missionaries" all understand the importance of doing missions, but lack the basic Sunday school training to defend their own faith. They can't answer the tough questions of the faith that on the field the world will certainly be lobbing their way.

In essence, the churches are sending forth spiritual children to do a spiritual adult's job.

"And so, what are the Southern Baptists missing when scratching their heads over the conflicting statistics?

We are missing that necessary step of equipping our own people in what they believe. And, an important component of what we believe is encapsulated in Bible prophecy.

Bible prophecy is an almost unheard of topic in many Southern Baptist churches. Preachers don't understand it so don't sermonize it. Pastors worry Bible prophecy could be divisive and result in numerical loss so avoid it. Missionaries have no idea how vital a topic it is when sharing the Gospel with the lost world and so are ignorant of it.

Bible prophecy is one-third of the Bible, so important to its author, the Holy Spirit. It contains the promises of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and only Savior, to mankind and to the whole world. Bible prophecy reveals that Jesus will return for those who have accepted His salvation. It provides hope in a world gone crazy. Bible prophecy teaches what happens to a person when they die, describing their eternal destiny in the grand scheme of God's plan for the ages. Bible prophecy reveals that each believer is part of something bigger than just the Church, but rather are a vital part of God's eternal kingdom. And most importantly, Bible prophecy teaches how just amazingly awesome God really is.

Southern Baptists, we are missing a vital part in the good work of bringing people to Christ — we are missing the power of the teaching of God through Bible prophecy. When we put study, especially the study of Bible prophecy, back into our churches and our missions, we will see God bring more souls to Him, changing those conversion statistics to His glory.

Ask the Professor

By Dr. Jeffrey Seif

Jeff, Do you think America is going to be crushed by its financial woes? Are we hopelessly doomed? Is God judging us for our sins? Will this be the end of our way of life?

First, I am not an economist and I can barely get my arms around the sources of our nation’s financial problems. I have trouble justifying the magnitude of the debt being incurred as a supposed solution. Second, my faith-prompted optimism distances me from words like “hopeless” and “doom.” Third, I have always understood change to be the norm in life—along with a resistance to it. While aspects of these questions belong to the discipline of economics, the theological aspect—the one related to God’s judgment—is one that I can address as a Bible teacher, along with its eschatological (end-times) implications.

Israel’s Old Testament constitution embraced the understanding that judgments of blessing and cursing would be visited upon Hebrews, here and now. According to Deut.28:1-14, for example, obedience to God’s ways came with the promise of many blessings. Conversely, according to vv. 15-68, dreaded curses of disobedience were spelled out for the non-compliant. The point is that judgment—good or bad—was understood as being experienced in the moment, here and now.

The New Testament, by contrast, places more of a premium on God’s ultimate judgment being more futuristic—with the better part of rewards and punishments doled out on the other side of the grave. Punishment for sin, for example, is noted with the unfortunates eventually being consigned to an abyss where they’ll get their just deserts. In Matthew 25:46, Jesus notes that some “will go to everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Paul described the reward for the righteous at days’ end saying, “Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” ( 2 Tim. 4:8).

With the better part of humanity’s rewards and punishment still futuristic and facilitated by “His appearing,” the question is: Is America receiving God’s judgment now—in advance of the ultimate judgment to come later?

Because America is not mentioned in Scripture, I can’t answer that question with certainty. On a personal and pastoral note, let me remind you that a triumphant and loving God “preserves the souls of His saints” and that He “delivers them out of the hand of the wicked” (Ps. 97:10).

What’s my humble suggestion to you? Love God and serve Him, and do so with the expectation that, as with the psalmist in 121:8, “the Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in.”

Lastly, like Zola, I can assure you that our program ends deliberately with Ps. 122:6—“pray for the peace of Jerusalem”—with a promise on the other side of that verse that says: “May they prosper who love you.” We do this based on our belief in a good God and His promise that there is a good future for those who serve Him.

The Certainty of Uncertainty

By Jerry Robinson

Back between 106 and 43 B.C., Cicero, one of the greatest minds of the Roman empire, is quoted as saying,
“The budget should be balanced; the treasury should be refilled; national debt should be reduced; and the arrogance of public officials should be controlled.”
Apparently not much has changed between Cicero’s time and today.

As 78 million Baby Boomers prepare to launch into the realm of retirement villages, entitlement benefits, and subsidized healthcare, no one can say with certainty how things will fare. But the one thing that is certain is the concept of retirement has changed and will continue to change. Gone are the days of working for the same corporation for 40 years, retiring with a nice watch, and then going home to collect a healthy pension.

In today’s era of hyper cost-consciousness and global competitiveness, many businesses are in a fight of survival simply to afford the most basic of employee benefits. In sharp contrast to the corporate America of yesteryear, the modern employee will likely be employed by a host of companies throughout his working lifetime. This will mostly be due to corporate downsizing, mergers and, more often than not, employee dissatisfaction.

Today, the financial risk and burden that once fell upon the corporation now falls onto the individual worker. Those under 40 years old who are planning on the federal government taking care of them financially in their old age are living in absolute ignorance. Barring a strong dose of fiscal discipline, coupled with political vision and intestinal fortitude, the American social safety net of government entitlements will falter before our eyes. Its impending collapse will be under the immense weight of inadequate planning, unrealistic promises, dreadful demographics, and skyrocketing medical costs. Or as the first Baby Boomer, Ms. Casey-Kirschling put it,
“I can’t imagine what’s going to happen with our children and our grandchildren. They’re not going to be able to retire.”
During a 2005 speech in Colorado, President George W. Bush expressed his growing concerns about the looming entitlement crisis by stating,
“Some of you may think there’s what they call a Social Security trust; the government collects the money for you, we hold it for you, and when you retire, we pay it to you. But that’s not how it works. You pay your payroll taxes, we pay for the people who have retired, and if there is any money left over, we spend it on government. That’s how it works. And what’s left is an empty IOU, a piece of paper.”
If your desire is to live free from deception, it is vital you wake up to the economic realities facing our nation. The truth is, the Social Security system is broken, as is the Medicare system. The entitlement crisis is real and there are no easy answers. But there are answers. Two that immediately come to mind are:
  • One choice is to cut entitlement benefits for Americans.
  • The second option is to raise taxes in order to pay for enormous government spending increases.
Of course, both of these are easier said than done because our current generation is notorious for its intolerance for any and all types of economic pain.

There is also a third option that will prove much less painful in the short term, but will be the most disastrous in the long term. That third option for the U.S. federal government, and its pain-adverse citizenry, in confronting the entitlement crisis will be to simply borrow the money. We borrow for everything else in this country, so why not just borrow the money we need to pay for the entitlement crisis? Borrowing from others will allow Americans to keep their financial house of cards propped up long enough to continue their lives of self-indulgence without having to bother with things like tax hikes and spending cuts.

Creating debt is what Americans do best. Why would it apply any other logic to the looming entitlement crisis?
